During a recent tour of Digicel's Tier III Data Centre, Anthony Hylton, minister of industry, investment and commerce, said information communication technology (ICT) would be a critical part of the technology infrastructure needed to make Jamaica's global logistics hub a success.

Last week's tour, which also included Dr Eric Deans, chairman of the Logistics and Investment Task Force, and other officials from the ministry, was led by Barry O'Brien, CEO, Digicel Jamaica; Jason Corrigan, general manager of Digicel Business; and Ative Ennis, head of enterprise solutions.

Digicel Business said it was looking forward to supporting and facilitating the modern ICT needs of investors who would help to make the logistics hub a success.

"A global logistics hub requires a great deal of connectivity and it must be powered by ICT," Corrigan said. "At Digicel Business, we partner with the global leaders in technology to provide world-class solutions and services that will enable Jamaica to join the ranks of other major logistics hubs across the globe."

He added: "This type of project opens the door to other near-shore opportunities that will be beneficial to both Jamaica and its investors. We see this development as one that will undoubtedly create growth opportunities for several sectors like the BPO industry, which we know holds tremendous benefits for the country."

For his part, Hylton said: "The logistics hub initiative does hold a lot of opportunities for us, and we see that when we look at our capabilities. We also talk about the hub being multi-modal, and an ICT background is critical to integrating that. I am very happy with what I've seen here today, and I have no doubt that Digicel Business' Tier III Data Centre will play an integral role in the establishment of Jamaica's logistics hub."

In addition to having the region's only Tier III Data Centre and most comprehensive product portfolio, which includes Cloud and Managed Services, Digicel said other plans are in the pipeline that would be critical to the logistics hub and which would be announced at a later date.
