Different hands on the steering - JAA starts Replacement Driver Programme

The Jamaica Automobile Association (JAA) has developed a Replacement Driver Programme through which persons can be transported to any location in Jamaica by certified and trained JAA drivers. This can be done using the client's own motor vehicle or in a JAA unit.

Duane Ellis, general manager of the JAA, said the service has proven useful, "especially for persons who wish to take trips to places outside of the Corporate Area that they are unfamiliar with, or who are not comfortable driving cross-country on their own".

This service is not exclusive to JAA members. It is open to individuals, corporate entities, and organisations in eight-hour blocks of time. "We can also provide replacement drivers for companies or organisations with fleets or facilitate members of their executive and management teams," Ellis explained.

The JAA is also prepared to accommodate specific requests by clients who may require the services of a replacement driver, in addition to the use of specialised vehicles. "At the JAA, we have an SUV fleet and larger multi-passenger vehicles that can be used for a variety of purposes," Ellis said. "Clients can choose to use vehicles from the JAA fleet, and, where necessary, to fulfil their dual requirements of a replacement driver and motor vehicle."

Comfortable and timely

Julie-Ann Burgher, who has been a JAA member for the past five years, used the replacement driver service to chauffeur a group of Canadian visitors around Kingston for three days, travelling in Coaster buses provided by the JAA.

She used two replacement drivers and the buses for a three-day excursion, as well as airport transfers. "The drivers were extremely courteous and accommodating and the service was very timely. The vehicles were comfortable and in good condition," she said.

With the provision of the replacement drivers and the buses, Burgher also saved on the cost of renting a vehicle separately.
