Banana workers in Suriname are threatening strike action if their demands for increased wages and better working conditions are not met.

The Nickerie Banana Workers Union (BABN) has given the management of the state-owned Foundation for Preservation of the Banana Sector (SBBS), two weeks to respond to its demands.

President of the Banana Workers Union, Dayanand Dwarka said the union could not guarantee normality in operations if its demands are not met.

According to Dwarka, the workers are forced to work long hours without overtime payments, and the SBBS is violating the fundamental rights of the workers.
