More than 14000 public health doctors in the Dominican Republic are on a 48-hour strike to support proposals for pay increases.
Union leaders are asking that the doctors\' salaries be doubled to US$ 1,700 a month.
Hundreds of patients at public hospitals and clinics were reportedly turned away this morning, with staff seeing emergency and critical cases only.
The Dominican government is urging the doctors to try to reach a compromise.
