Guyana promises rice security

CARICOM’s main supplier of rice has given the guarantee that it will maintain its exports to its regional neighbours.

According to Guyana’s Agriculture Minister, Robert Persaud, while producers in other parts of the world have significantly cut back on their exports, his country has no need to do so.

He said Guyana is committed to increasing its rice production to meet regional demand.

Mr. Persaud said the government would be monitoring the situation to ensure that there is enough rice on the local market.

He said although bulk rice will be exported as usual, a ban has been imposed on the export of rice bran raw material for feed.

The Guyana government has reportedly increased the commission on rice exports from US$6 per tonne to US$ 10 per tonne.
