The United Nations Secretary General, Ban Ki-moon, is reportedly setting up a task force to tackle the global food crisis.

The task force, which is to be chaired by Mr. Ban, will comprise the heads of UN agencies and the World Bank.

The UN Secretary General said it is the priority of the UN to feed the hungry by closing a US$755 million funding gap for its World Food Programme this year.

According to Mr. Ban US$200 million will be used to support farmers in poor countries, who are producing less because of the high cost of fertiliser and energy.

He is also urging donor countries to make more money available to fund the programme.
