A senior Mexican police official has been gunned down in the capital, Mexico City.

Mexican officials said Edgar Millan Gomez was in charge of coordinating national police operations against drugs traffickers.

He was reportedly shot nine times outside his home early yesterday and died later in hospital.

Two of his bodyguards were also wounded in the attack.

The police are investigating whether the attack was drug-related.

Several top policemen have been killed in the past week.

Investigators have since arrested a 34 year old man in connection with the attack.
