Australia defeat New Zealand

Australia captain Ricky Ponting smashed an unbeaten 107 to lead his side to a seven-wicket victory over New Zealand in the first One Day International in Adelaide.



New Zealand batted first and scored 254 for seven with wicketkeeper Brendon McCallum leading the way with 96 off 103 balls.



Also getting among the runs were Ross Raylor (50) and Jacob Oram (32)



Bowling for Australia, Shawn Tait took three for 59 and Brett Lee two for 48.



Australia replied with 255 for three against the bowling of Kyle Mills two for 68.



Ponting (107 not out) and Michael Clarke (48) shared a stand of 135 to help ease Australia home with 45 balls to spare.



Adam Gilchrist smashed 51.



The next match in the three-match Chappell-Hadlee series is on Sunday in Sydney.
