Dominica against CET removal

A senior member of the Roosevelt Skerrit administration in Dominica has disagreed with a proposal by CARICOM governments to remove the Common External Tariff (CET), on certain items.

The regional leaders proposed the measure during a summit in Guyana earlier this month to deal with the high cost of living in the Caribbean.

Economic Development and Planning Minister Julius Timothy said the removal of the CET may not have the desired impact of reducing the cost of living.

He says the focus should be on productivity and creating employment opportunities.

Regional governments should seek to remove the other charges in order to make the CET proposal effective, he added.
