Court blocks new Florida law

A United States federal judge has temporarily blocked a new Florida law that would have imposed a stiff bond and other restrictions on travel agencies booking trips to Cuba.

Lawyers for the companies argued that the measure appeared to preempt federal law and could put the agencies out of business.

The law, which should have taken effect on Tuesday, would force agencies to put up a quarter million dollar bond if they booked tours to Cuba.

Other travel agencies would pay just US$25,000.

Another hearing in the case is scheduled for next week Friday.
