UK calls for rape inquiry squad

The Association of Chief Police Officers in the United Kingdom is calling for a specialist squad to investigate rape allegations.

Metropolitan Police Assistant Commissioner, John Yates, believes such teams would help to raise the standards of victim care.

He said they would also help to improve conviction rates as rape inquiries are demanding and require specialist skills.

At least six percent of rapes in England and Wales reportedly result in a conviction.

According to the British Crime Survey, of reported rape cases, 70 percent do not even make it to court.

Mr. Yates wants every force to have its own rape investigation unit with child protection and murder teams.
