Analysts weigh in on CARICOM Summit

Several international political analysts say US President Barack Obama is likely to face a group of leaders far less forgiving than their European counterparts in respect of Washington’s role in the global financial crisis.

Obama plans to take his message of partnership to the Caribbean and Latin America at the April 17-19 Fifth Summit of the Americas.

The Washington-based Inter-American Development Bank, IDB, says the region has posted the fastest economic growth rates in the world, over the past five years.

But IDB president Luis Alberto Moreno says those gains are now being threatened by the global economic downturn.

Some analysts say while CARICOM leaders may be less vocal at the summit, their Latin American counterparts are likely to be more strident.
