A blessing in disguise

THE EDITOR, Sir:
Painful as it might be for those who lost their jobs when Air Jamaica was divested, the taxpayers must nevertheless be thankful that the Government had the courage to force the deal down our throats.
However, all is not lost. The nation still owns a small portion of its body that flies.
Recently, Trinidad and Tobago's Minister of Works and Transport Austin Warner said, "... The merger between Caribbean Airlines Limited and Air Jamaica will embrace the Caribbean as a united front." He also said, "... The merger embodied the concept of 'One Airline, One Vision and One Caribbean'."
I applaud him wholeheartedly, and also lift my hat to the Golding administration for its courage in this instance. The Government, in carrying out the process of divestment, was decisive in acting in the best interests of the taxpaying public. While ignoring the moaning and groaning of the liberals and their trade-union counterparts in the short run, there is optimism that the decision will bring prosperity to the people of Jamaica and the Caribbean in the long run.
