Tackle corruption

THE EDITOR, Sir:

It is refreshing and I think well overdue hearing the charge the chairman of the Police Federation, Sergeant Raymond Wilson, gave to subofficers at a recent graduation ceremony in Montego Bay.

In essence, Wilson said the federation will not defend members who are involved in wrongdoings. He warned: "The Police Federation is no safe haven for members who deliberately engage in acts of corruption or any illegal or inappropriate conduct."

I am sure that corrupt/potentially corrupt members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force will think twice before involving themselves in corrupt activities. I think our trade unions should follow Wilson's lead and issue similar warnings to their members.

Too often members of unions get involved in corruption and unethical conduct, yet their unions staunchly defend them, even in face of overwhelming evidence of the misdeeds. In order to make a dent in corruption, unions must play their role.

They must, with one voice, throw down the gauntlet to their members.
