CAC wants Broadcasting Commission to clarify issues arising from cable clampdown

The Consumer Affairs Commission (CAC) wants the Broadcasting Commission to clarify a number of issues related to its directive to local cable operators to cease the unauthorised transmission of scores of channels.

The Commission has given cable operators until the end of this month to remove as many as 19 channels from their offerings.

In a statement today, the consumer protection body says it has written to the Broadcasting Commission seeking clarification on what will obtain after the May 31 deadline.

The CAC also wants the Broadcasting Commission to outline the measures that are to be implemented to ensure that the content provided by cable companies are licensed and legal.

Meanwhile, the CAS is advising Jamaicans to examine the variation clause in their service agreements as it relates to the packages and channels that are to be provided.

The consumer protection body says persons with complaints should take their contracts to its offices in Kingston, Mandeville and Montego Bay or email them to info@cac.gov.jm.

The CAC notes that the Consumer Protection Tribunal is an available recourse for persons who believe they have been aggrieved because of a breach of the country’s consumer protection laws.
