The Police Federation, which represents rank and file members of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, has revealed that it spent $58 million in legal fees last financial year.

This was disclosed by Federation General Secretary, Detective Corporal Carol Chisholm, at its annual general meeting now underway in Montego Bay, St James.

For his part, National Security Minister, Peter Bunting, said it is important that law abiding members of the JCF receive the necessary legal support.

Bunting revealed the government had allocated $20 million to the Federation’s legal defence fund.

He said he intervened after concerns were raised by the Federation.

Bunting says the government will continue to support the fund.
