Jamaican man found guilty of smuggling cocaine into Bermuda

A Jamaican man convicted of trying to smuggle cocaine into Bermuda four months ago is facing the possibility of a lengthy prison sentence.

Thirty one-year-old Tyrone Brown, an electrician of a Kingston address, was yesterday found guilty by a Supreme Court jury.

Brown was convicted of importing 894.6 grams of cocaine worth approximately US$100,000 into Bermuda.

He had denied the allegation.

The Jamaican man has been remanded until a sentencing date is set in October.

The jury heard that Brown arrived in Bermuda in April on a flight from Miami, Florida, having travelled from Jamaica.

Customs officer Andrea McKey told the court that Brown appeared nervous when he presented her with a blank immigration form.

The jury further heard that he told officials that he had come to Bermuda on holiday, but was not planning on meeting anyone.

Brown’s luggage did not arrive until the next day, and when it was searched by customs officers, two packages of cocaine were found concealed in a black handbag.

Brown was subsequently arrested.
