Reno clip Humble Lion at Frome

Afiba Chambers scored a 90th-minute header to give FC Reno their first win of the two-week-old Red Stripe Premier League season, a 1-0 win over Humble Lion at the Frome Sports Ground yesterday.

The match was originally scheduled for Sunday but was called off minutes into the action because of heavy rain.

Yesterday, midfielder Chambers, Kadeem Stone, and forward Romario Brown looked sharp in attack alongside the returning Davion Thorpe, who spent a number of seasons at former Westmoreland parish champions Savannah FC.

The goal came after a swift build-up. With the ball won in Reno's defensive third, they moved it quickly through the Humble Lion midfield area before the referee whistled for a foul on Jashane Foster.

From the resulting free-kick, the ball was sent to the far post and headed back across goal to Chambers, who nodded the ball into an unguarded net.

The win moved the Westmoreland-based club from tenth in the standings to five points and fourth place on goal difference alongside Portmore United.

The visitors only had themselves to blame as they created enough chances to score but failed to do so.

Their best chance fell to Woolery Wolf, who missed the target from inside the area in the 37th minute.

After that, they had several other close attempts wasted, leaving coach Donovan Duckie ruing the missed chances.

"It's early, and, of course, we never want to lose any game, but it's best we lose them now than later. I think we have enough time to get it right," he said.

It was the opposite sentiment for Downswell. He praised his players' never-say-die attitude, saying he is expecting much more from them this season.

"We have a really young team and they played reasonably well today. The game itself was a good one tactically for both teams, the difference being the mistake the Humble Lion made, and we got the goal," he noted.
