Defending champions book ISSA T20 semifinal place

WOLMER’S BOYS’ School showed why they are champions, coming up big in their must-win clash against May Day High in their final-round Super 8 clash in the ISSA/TVJ T20 encounter at the Ultimate Oval in St Ann.

The Heroes Circle-based school chalked up a comfortable 112-run win to leapfrog May Day into second place in Zone ‘B’ and book their spot in the semifinal where they will face last year’s beaten finalists St Elizabeth Technical High School (STETHS).

Wolmer’s first posted 192 for just two wickets in their allotted 20 overs with the opening pair of Jose Northover and Corey Hinds doing the brunt of the scoring, adding 125 runs for the opening wicket in 14 overs.

Northover went via the run-out route for 53, while Hinds was bowled by Christopher Lewis for 54.

Jordan Johnson chipped in with a cameo innings of 39 while captain Justin Beckford made 19.

May Day, in reply, found the going tough against the formidable Wolmer’s spin attack, wobbling to just 80 for seven in their 20 overs.

Wolmer’s will next face Zone ‘A’ winners STETHS who kept their unbeaten run intact following a six-wicket win over Tacky High.

Tacky were able to get to 113 for seven in their 20 overs, Tevaughn Williams top-scoring with 39 not out and Giovanni Richardson getting 24. Captain Malique Williams bagged two wickets for 13 runs for STETHS who posted 114 for four in 17.2 overs. Opener Sean Roye scored 34 and Marlon Powell, 25. Odane Binns and Odel Samuels, with unbeaten knocks of 14 each, got STETHS over the line.

The other semifinal will see Zone ‘B’ winners Manchester High facing Excelsior High after both teams wrapped up victories in their final set of group matches.

STGC BLOWN AWAY

In the opening fixture of a doubleheader at Kensington Park, Manchester easily disposed of St George’s College by nine wickets.

The North Street-based St George’s, who were out of contention for a semifinal place, only fielded 10 players and were blown away, posting just 34 runs for the loss of nine wickets in 18.3 overs. The score was bolstered by top-scoring extras of 10. Captain Sanjay Walker took four wickets for just seven runs and Demario Jones bagged two wickets for two runs in his solitary over.

Manchester then eased to 35 for one, with Walker scoring an unbeaten 17 and Orane Wright getting 12 not out.

Manchester’s opponent in the semifinal, Excelsior secured their passage after finishing second in zone ‘A’ following a 12-run win over St Jago High School.

Excelsior only managed 113 for six in their 20 overs, opener David Dewar leading the way with 40 from 48 balls including four fours. Justin Adams chipped in with 20, against two wickets each for Milton Luckain and Antwon Robinson.

St Jago, who batted one short, were able to get to 101 for nine in 19.3 overs. Luckain top-scored with 26 while Akeem Samuels scored 19.

Demarco Scott and Tamarie Redwood picked up two wickets each.
