WITH A champion-like performance, Mona High got the better of Tarrant High 9-1 in Zone B action of the ISSA/WATA Manning Cup yesterday.

Mona kept a comfortable grip on the game from start to finish, routing a plucky Tarrant who tried their best to repel the defending champions.

Goals from Demarion Harris, Sean Leighton, Robino Gordon, Javier Dunn, Ryan Gourzong, and Marlon Cunningham led the way for Mona.

Cameron Harris’ effort proved to be a consolation for Tarrant at the end.

Mona High’s assistant coach Kyle Butler said while the result was a welcome bonus, the main priority was the way the team played.

“The result is definitely one that is encouraging and we’re very confident that we’re going to go all the way,” he stated. “It’s far more than just the result, it’s about how we played and how our system worked.

“That is what we’re really focused on and not necessarily the score. We’re ensuring that we’re doing the right things, so when we come across good opposition, then we’ll be ready.”

Mona wasted no time as Harris opened the scoring within seconds to stun the visitors.

Things only got worse.

In the 11th minute, Tarrant’s Everton Levy put the ball into his own net to double Mona’s lead before Leighton completed a first-half brace with goals in the 16th and 35th minutes. Harris also got his second goal in the 24th minute.

Gordon joined the action at the hour mark after a collision between two Tarrant defenders allowed him an easy finish. Dunn scored the seventh four minutes later.

Second-half substitute Gourzong made it eight with a volley from close range before Cunningham sealed the win with a header in the dying minutes of the game.

The result sees Mona staying clear atop Zone B with nine points while Tarrant sit fourth in the zone with three.
