King’s Counsel Peter Champagnie appointed chairman of GLC disciplinary committee

King's Counsel Peter Champagnie has been appointed Chairman of the Disciplinary Committee of the General Legal Council.

The appointment took effect on October 1.

Champagnie, who is well-known for his work in advocacy, has been practising as an attorney-at-law for 29 years.

He is a former student of Meadowbrook High School and is one of the most sought after lawyers in Jamaica.

In January 2020, Champagnie was appointed Queen's Counsel (now King's Counsel).

The appointment is made to attorneys who have served at the Bar for at least 10 years and displayed good character as well as advocacy.

The Disciplinary Committee of the GLC performs the function of upholding standards of professional conduct of attorneys-at-law and enforcing discipline in the legal profession.

It also deals with complaints from clients regarding alleged unprofessional conduct by some of its members and after having hearings regarding the complaints, make the relevant rulings and recommendations.

Champagnie who was called to the Bar in 1995 is also a Justice of the Peace.
