UPDATE: Digicel confirms employee separation plan

Telecoms company Digicel has confirmed that it is re-organising its business in the Caribbean and Latin America which will result in the separation of some its employees.

In an emailed-response to queries from The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre, group public relations officer, Gillian Power, said “Digicel is re-organising its business in the region to have the right people with the right skills in the right jobs.”

She says this phase of separation will be done under a voluntary programme.

"The Voluntary Separation Programme is an opportunity for employees who may be considering a career or lifestyle change to leave the company voluntarily while receiving enhanced separation terms that they would not otherwise get."

According to the PRO, "Digicel is evolving at a significant pace [and] that the separation programme is based on the company’s focus on driving efficiencies and the need to realign the organisation following the integration of a number of new operations."

Power explained that because the programme is voluntary, the number of employees to be affected cannot be ascertained yet.

And she said the deadline for applications under the programme is April 15.

The company did not explain what will happen to employees who do not opt for the voluntary separation.

However, The Gleaner/Power 106 News Centre understands that some of those persons could see their positions made redundant. 

Employees in the French West Indies and Panama are not affected.

This is the third voluntary redundancy the company had made since 2009.

The last one was in 2012.
