Nearly 1,100 pounds of ganja valued at J$2.7 million have been seized by the police.

The contraband was seized at the Kingston Wharves yesterday morning.
The police say about 9 a.m. Saturday, security personnel called the Narcotics Police to assist in the search for a container that they were unable to find. The container was subsequently found with six parcels containing nearly 74 pounds of ganja.

Investigators say the container, which arrived in the island on August 7 from the United States, was destined for the Netherlands.

The discovery led the police to another container, which had 10 large duffle bags. A search of the bags revealed 262 parcels containing approximately 1,000 and 22 pounds of ganja. The container had arrived in Jamaica on July 26 from China and was scheduled to depart for Suriname.

The police did not say whether any arrests were made in connection with the drug finds.
