Bromfield, Nedrick strike gold

With three gold medals and one bronze, Jamaica currently sit ninth of 56 countries competing at this year's Commonwealth Youth Games inside the Apia Sports Complex, located on the Pacific island of Samoa.

Kevin Nedrick, who represented Jamaica at the IAAF World Youth Championships in Chile earlier this year, struck gold in the boys' discus.

He threw a personal best 20.12 metres and bettered his previous 19.00m standard.

South Africans Werner Jakobus Visser and Burger Lambrechts finished second and third, respectively, with 19.78 and 19.31 metres.

Prior to Nedrick's shot put gold, Junelle Bromfield struck gold with an inspirational run in the girls 400 metres.

She won in a time of 53.09 seconds, beating Jisna Mathew of India, 53.14, and Idamadudu Praise Oghenef of Nigeria, who clocked 53.20 for third.

In a race where the lead dramatically changed three times in the last 80 metres, Bromfield made the decisive surge in her last few strides to win gold.

Speaking at a press conference prior to the start of the Games, Bromfield said she would "be inspired by the recent successes of her senior athletes in Beijing in striving for a medal".

The Commonwealth Youth Games will end on Friday.
