Morant Bay High homecoming activities raise funds for school

MORANT BAY, St Thomas:
Morant Bay High School (MBHS) in St Thomas is to see an improvement in the school's entrance through funds raised at the homecoming weekend last week.
The events began with a Past Students' Lyme at Bath Fountain Hotel which had long-time friends meeting, greeting and catching up with each other. Then it was time to work as a team again and they gathered their strength and expertise to match up against the school's current footballers in a friendly competition.
The young players were left gasping for air in disbelief as the 'elders' defeated them with a score of six goals to one.
Later that Saturday evening, jerseys were changed to suits, and rags to handkerchiefs as the alumni celebrated their homecoming dinner and dance.
The evening's proceedings began with the usual welcome and opening remarks. Master of Ceremony Dr Brian James, who proclaimed that he is a proud past student of the Morant Bay High School, kept the attendees entertained though the night's activities.
Great food
On the menu was locally prepared food, which included Cedar Valley's pumpkin purÈe with Golden Grove's garlic bread, Spring Garden's crispy green with vinaigrette dressing, Retreat's balsamic-mango marinated grilled chicken, Port Morant's pan-seared fish fillet with cilantro-celery, White Horses' rosemary honey-roasted pork and Sunning Hill's fruitcake with rum sauce.
While the alumni, teachers and a few current students devoured these delectable dishes, they were serenaded by the Audley Searchwell and Friends Band.
Dinner was followed by greetings from the president of the Jamaica Chapter of the Morant Bay High School Alumni Association, Dwight Jackson.
Jackson, who has only been president for a few months, says he welcomes the opportunity to connect with old friends and past schoolmates to reflect on their time spent together at the institution.
"Earlier this year, we had a fundraising event, which aided the purchase of three desktop computers, two wireless Internet expanders and a laser jet printer for the school's library," he said.
The president said the alumni is now working on a digitisation project to increase the digital presence and points access to the vast expanse of past MBHS students.
Past student and medallist Hansle Parchment, who was also in attendance, was presented with a plaque for his contribution to track and field.
The hurdler expressed his gratitude, noting that he was humbled by the presentation and is looking forward to the association's support, as he has a very important year ahead.
