JUTC urges students to update profiles to avoid paying adult fare

Students turning 12 years old who use the state-run Jamaica Urban Transit Company (JUTC) are being urged to update their Smarter Card profiles to continue benefiting from concessionary bus fares.

Children aged 11 and under pay a reduced bus fare of $30, while the elderly and the disabled are charged $40 when they ride on JUTC buses with Smarter Cards.

But JUTC Marketing and Communications Manager Reginald Allen says the Smarter Card system automatically charges the non-concessionary rate of $100 for people over 11 years old and so students over that age must seek to update their cards to continue paying the discounted rates.

He says students over 11 years old can visit any JUTC location to update their Smarter Card profiles.

These include: the Spanish Town transport centres, the JUTC office in Greater Portmore, the Half-Way Tree Transport Centre and the JUTC office at East Parade in downtown Kingston.

There is no cost to update the profile, and students are being urged to carry their Smarter Cards with them when they go to the JUTC locations.
