The police have charged the Portmore man accused of abducting and raping a 14-year-old girl in Portmore, St Catherine last December.

Andrew Lewis has been charged with rape and grievous assault after he was pointed out in an identification parade on Tuesday.

The case attracted national attention after it was revealed that Lewis escaped custody while being escorted into the Waterford Police Station.

He had just been transported in the same service vehicle as the victim and was being led into the station when he reportedly turned and ran away.

The police had said the handcuffs were defective.

The Inspectorate of the Constabulary had probed the incident but said its recommendations would have been restricted because the relatives of the teen who witnessed the escape did not come forward to offer a statement.

Lewis was recaptured on the weekend in Portmore with the help of residents.
