Earth Today | ‘Go Green Expo’ targets students

THE JAMAICA Climate Change Youth Council (JCCYC) is targeting high-school students for their inaugural Go Green International Day of Climate Action Expo on October 21.

A youth affiliate of the Jamaica Climate Change Advisory Board, JCCYC aims to raise awareness about the effects of climate change among young people in Jamaica.

Director Eleanor Terrelonge said the event, which will be held at the Karram Speid Auditorium at the Merl Grove High School, is geared at raising awareness about climate change issues.

"We want young persons to learn about climate change and also about the solutions that can be implemented to mitigate the effects that climate change has already had on our environment," Terrelonge explained.

JCCYC aims to attract hundreds between the ages of 18 and 35 to the event, which coincides with International Climate Action Day.

"We especially want students from high school to come to our expo because we want them to become invested in the mitigation against the effects of climate change. They can be the fountain of information for their peers and families," noted Terrelonge.

The activities on the day will include panel discussions, tree planting, water repurposing activities and a scavenger hunt even as 24 organisations from the public and private sectors set up booths that highlight different aspects of climate change.
