Prison warder who injured policewoman in traffic stop denied bail

Prison warder Dwayne Poyser who fled a police traffic stop and injured a policewoman in the process, was denied bail and remanded into custody when he appeared in the St Catherine Parish Court on Friday.

Poyser is charged with attempted murder, assault occasioning bodily harm and disobeying a command by a constable.

Poyser, who is from Eltham Park in Spanish Town, St Catherine, is also charged with use if fraudulent licence disc, use of fraudulent registration plates, and operating contrary to the terms of his license.

During a bail application, his attorney told the court that his client did not see that he was dragging the policewoman along the ground.

The lawyer further argued that his client stopped the vehicle as soon as he heard her crying out in distress and heard a banging sound.

In countering the bail application, the Clerk of Court argued that the policewoman was suspended from the driver side of the car.

It was also argued that the allegations were very serious and no address has yet been determined for the accused.

Allegations are that about 4 o’clock on the afternoon of December 3 the policewoman was a part of a police team conducting traffic duties along Burke Road when the accused was signalled to stop.

The policewoman reportedly placed her hand inside the vehicle and the accused sped off and closed the window of the car trapping her hand inside the vehicle.

She was dragged along the road for several meters.

The car was intercepted by police personnel who chased the driver.

The injured policeman, who received several bruises, was rescued and taken to hospital where she was admitted.
