Intriguing girls 400m expected

A week ago at the Carifta Trials, the Hydel pair of Shian Salmon and Cherokee Young were involved in a close tussle with St Andrew High's Janielle Josephs, before Salmon came out on top in 52.73 seconds in the 400m ahead of her teammate, who was second in 52.84 seconds, with Josephs taking third in 53.56 seconds.

In that race, Josephs actually took the lead when the athletes hit the home stretch, but the Hydel duo found extra in the final 40 metres to outlast a very gutsy Josephs.

Salmon will not face the starter in today's event at the GC Foster Classics - the Digicel Grand Prix finale, as she has opted for the 400 metre hurdles instead, but despite her absence, another epic battle is expected here.

Young and Josephs will be joined by another Hydel High standout, Garriel Whyte, the Carifta Trials Under-17 champion, who won in 54.09 seconds, along with Holmwood Technical's Danielle Deer, who was second.

Young will definitely start as the favourite here, but the Class Two duo of Whyte and especially Josephs - following that run a week ago, could surprise.
