Netball Jamaica to host June 24 golf tourney

In an effort to raise more than $1 million Netball Jamaica (NJ) will be hosting its inaugural staging of the Come Scramble with Jamaica Sunshine Girls fund-raising golf tournament.

The two-person scramble full handicap tournament will be held at the Caymanas Golf Course on Sunday, June 24.

Speaking at yesterday's press launch at the Caymanas Golf Club, Tricia Robinson, first vice president of Netball Jamaica, said the association will be looking to maximise its earnings from the tournament.

"We are doing this for the first time and we are planning to raise ... as much as possible. We are looking at a minimum of one million dollars," said Robinson.

"We have some fantastic sponsors on board supporting the venture and we hope that after today's event we will have more sponsors coming on board," she said.

The money earned from the championships will go towards hosting upcoming series against Trinidad and Tobago and England as well as preparing the Sunshine Girls for next year's World Netball Championships which will be held in Liverpool, England.

President of the Jamaica Golf Association (JGA), Peter Chin, said his organisation is in full support of the tournament.

"This is great because a lot of charities use golf as a means of raising funds and a sporting association is in need and we are very willing to help," said Chin.

"Normally, you have sponsors and then the golfing fraternity comes out, pays their entry fees and participate and that's how the money is raised," he said.

"We are expecting a very successful tournament because of the reputation and the popularity of the Sunshine Girls," Chin added.

Entry fees are adults - $7,000 and juniors - $4,000.
