No shortage of water meters says NWC

The National Water Commission (NWC) is rubbishing claims that a lack of water meter is causing persons to steal to the commodity.

The NWC says it is not short of meters, noting that last year it signed a contract for 450,000 state-of-the-art, solid-state water meters over 5 years to be used both on premises that are now unmetered and to replace old mechanical meters on other premises.

The agency notes that persons need not to have a meter installed on their premises in order to be legal, paying customer .

It says under the NWC Act, customers may be legally connected to the NWC network and be billed for water use by some other mechanism than a meter reading.

The NWC explains that in most cases where meters are not available or deemed appropriate, a flat-rate arrangement is usually used to calculate the customer’s monthly bill.

The commission says claims of meters not being available are therefore not an excuse for persons to illegally connect to its network.

The NWC is encouraging persons not now legally connected to its network to take the necessary steps to get to become regularise rather than expose themselves to disconnection and prosecution.
