United States (US) Interior Secretary Ryan Zinke is to demit office at the end of the year, the latest high-profile departure from the Trump administration.

US President Donald Trump confirmed Zinke’s departure in a message posted on Twitter.

The interior department oversees federal lands, including national parks such as Yosemite and Yellowstone.

White House Chief of Staff John Kelly is also expected to demit office at the end of the year.

Zinke has been embroiled in allegations of ethics violations.

The former Navy Seal and Montana congressman has faced scrutiny over expensive trips in US Park Police helicopters and on private jets.

Trump thanked Zinke for his service, saying he had "achieved much during his tenure".

He says a new interior secretary would be appointed next week.

Zinke joins a long list of senior officials who have left the Trump administration in the nearly two years since Trump took office.

Others include Jeff Sessions, the former Attorney General, Rex Tillerson, the former Secretary of State, and Nikki Haley, the former Ambassador to the United Nations.
