Portmore are growing–Gardner - ‘Bibi’ pleased with win over Molynes while TG’s unbeaten run continues
After an impressive victory over Arnett Gardens last weekend, Portmore United followed that up with a controlled display in a 2-0 win over Molynes United in their Red Stripe Premier League (RSPL) game at the Constant Spring complex yesterday.
Head coach Ricardo ‘Bibi’ Gardner believes that his team is finding its rhythm at the right time of the season.
“We are improving, we want to continue to improve as there is always room for improvement, and we will continue to push ourselves individually and collectively on a daily basis,” Gardner said.
“We just have to continue to work hard on the training ground and continue to believe and play the way we play and just continue to give the best of ourselves every week,” he added.
Portmore dictated play from the opening minute, although Molynes defended well and kept the champions from creating any clear cut chances.
However, all of Molynes’ good work in defence was undone by central defender Ronaldo Smith, who sliced the ball into his own net after 28 minutes.
Portmore continued to control the game, and they added to their lead four minutes from the break when Chevaney Willis’ free kick deflected to Shandee Smith, who volleyed home from eight yards out.
Molynes brought on Tajahe Dixon and Nicholos Nelson at the start of the second half, and the hosts made a better game of the contest.
However, they failed to really trouble the defending champions who went on to secure their second straight win and lift themselves to third place in the standings. Molynes remained in 10th place on 24 points, seven points above the relegation zone.
TG remain unbeaten
Tivoli Gardens are now unbeaten in eight games after their 1-0 win over UWI FC courtesy of Stephen Barnett’s 71st-minute strike while Waterhouse secured a close win over cellar dwellers Vere with a similar result, with substitute Shaquille Bradford stealing the win with an added-time goal.
