Esher top Western Primary Champs for first time
WESTERN BUREAU:
Esher Primary School of Hanover were crowned first-time champions of the Western Primary Championship at Cornwall College last Saturday.
Esher amassed 284 points to take the title ahead of former champions Howard Coke Primary (263.5), Barracks Road Primary (205), Hague Primary (134), and Duncans (123) rounded out the top five.
Coach of Esher Primary, Lisa Blake, said they are happy to close out their season by lifting the trophy for the first time.
“We are elated. It’s our first time winning this title, and it’s just our hard work and dedication paying off. I must thank the parents and school community who have been really supportive,” Blake said.
Albert Ferguson, the meet director, was delighted that the meet had returned with quality performances after being absent for a few years due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
“We have seen the talent on display from all the athletes of the 20 schools that participated. Even schools taking part for the first time really had some outstanding performances which I am proud to see. I have to congratulate Esher on winning, they have been doing well this year after placing second at the Insports Western championships,” Ferguson said.
“The performances show that coaching is taking place even though a lot of the schools do not have a physical education teacher. The regular classroom teachers have been stepping up. We are grateful for the support from the Social Development Commission, Taylors Art Media Awards, Deja Resort and Neish Finance whose support keeps ensuring that track and field remains viable in the west. We, however, would prefer to have the kids competing on the synthetic surface at the Montego Bay Sports Complex in Catherine Hal,l so I hope the powers that be will step up to make it possible once more,” he added.
