Generator use results in three cases of carbon monoxide poisoning
The Ministry of Health and Wellness says it has been advised of three cases of carbon monoxide poisoning related to the use of generators.
Carbon monoxide is a colourless, odourless, tasteless gas and is produced when fuel and other carbon-containing organic materials are burned.
The ministry is reminding members of the public to follow precautions to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning.
· Do not use them indoors or in enclosed areas.
· Keep generators in a dry area. Water will damage generators as well as produce an electrical hazard.
· The generator should be kept at a safe distance from structures because of engine heat.
· Avoid using appliances that have a heating element, for example toaster or hair dyer.
· Select the outlet that uses the correct voltage, as some generators have the ability to produce 115/120 volts or 220 volts.
