The Ministry of Education and Youth (MOEY) National Summer Academy 2024, which was postponed due to the impact of Hurricane Beryl, will now take place from July 15 to 25.

According to a bulletin issued by the Ministry, the passage of the hurricane has significantly affected communities and the ability to travel to school venues, therefore, programmes will be offered online until it is again possible to engage in lessons face-to-face.

Students who normally have Internet challenges at home may use any free community Wi-Fi access point to log in, or they may access it from the closest Jamaica Library Service (JLS) venue to them.

Access to free support materials from partners of the MOEY, including a wide range of Cheetah materials and Book Merchants (Scholastics BookFlix stories with accompanying videos), will be made available through the Google Classrooms.

Students are being encouraged to make full use of these.

Meanwhile, children between four and 14 years old can also opt to participate in the 'Read More for 2024' summer activities at these libraries. These are arranged by the JLS and will also begin on July 15 and end on August 12.

Current junior library members are automatically included in these sessions. However, non-members of the stated age group can register and join the programme.

Due to the passage of Hurricane Beryl, the St Elizabeth Parish Library Network will host a summer programme at the Malvern Branch Library only.

The Read More for 2024 summer activities will be guided by the staff of the JLS, while the MOEY Summer Academy online lessons will be delivered by technical officers of the Ministry of Education and Youth, to include Numeracy and Literacy Coaches and Specialists, along with other educators.

These lessons will include empowerment tips (psychosocial support), special needs support (integrated in lesson delivery) and fun-based experiences (games).

Enquiries about the Read More for 2024 can be made at any JLS branch or submitted to the JLS via WhatsApp number at 876-275-0396.
