ST JOHN’S, Antigua (CMC):

Cricket West Indies (CWI) has announced that elections for the office of vice president will take place on September 20, 2024. The decision follows a meeting of the CWI Board of Directors on Thursday, August 8, 2024, in response to a recent ruling by the High Court of Guyana.

The court ruling addressed a challenge initiated by the Guyana Cricket Board regarding the previous vice presidential election, prompting CWI to call for re-elections.

As a result of this decision, Azim Bassarath has stepped down from his role as vice president.

Commenting on the situation, CWI President Dr Kishore Shallow stated, “This presents an invaluable opportunity to strengthen the CWI Memorandum and Articles of Association. Policies and frameworks are bound to be tested over time. As a board, we must remain open-minded and committed to evolving in all aspects; this circumstance is a testament to that fact.”

Dr Shallow also expressed gratitude for Bassarath’s professionalism during this process, saying, “I am particularly grateful for the level of cooperation and professionalism in which Mr Bassarath has handled this matter, and I extend my gratitude to him for such.”

Per CWI’s Articles of Association, a Special Meeting of Members will be convened on September 20, 2024, solely to elect a new vice president.

CWI says it remains committed to upholding democratic principles and transparency, ensuring that the upcoming election will be conducted with the highest standards of fairness and in alignment with the organisation’s core values.
