‘It is a marathon’

IT WAS all smiles in the Montego Bay United (MBU) camp following the final whistle on Sunday following their 4-1 beating of host Vere United in the opening fixture of the 2024-2025 Jamaica Premier League (JPL).

Argentinian coach Rodolfo Zapata went around and personally hugged every player and handed out high-fives to his coaching staff following the comprehensive opening day victory.

MBU took the lead in the seventh minute through Trinidadian defender Jordan Britto before Vere levelled four minutes later through Damion Thomas.

Montego Bay United then took control of the fixture in the second half, as Brian Brown, captain Owayne Gordon, and Shaniel Thomas scored to complete the 4-1 victory.

It was the start the former champions had hoped for, with the win extending their unbeaten league streak to 11 games, dating back to last season.

After missing out on the playoffs last season, Rodolfo knows all too well that the work has just begun, if the rural team is to make it into the top half of the league this time around.

“The Jamaica Premier League is tough and competitive and it is not just a 100m sprint, it is a marathon. Winning the first game is very important to build confidence, but the most important thing is how we play, which is beautiful football,” said Zapata.

The much-travelled Argentinian coach says he will be pulling on all his experience, having coached in CONCACAF in Canada and the United States.

Zapata had nothing but praise for his experienced players such as captain Gordon, new midfield recruit Demario Phillips and strikers Brown and Thomas.

With a few players still to come into the set-up, Zapapta believes he has the right formula for the long haul.

“We have to put in the work, but we have a nice group of experienced players and youngsters. The board members and coaching staff are doing a great job, so I am happy and proud at this point.”

Montego Bay is set to be in action again on Monday when they host Harbour View at the Catherine Hall Sports Complex.
