The Mazda CX-60, a larger and more premium offering compared to its predecessor, the CX-5, has finally made its way to our local shores in Jamaica. I was quite familiar with the CX-5, so I was eager to delve into the intricacies of the 2.5-litre AWD variant, and what it had to offer in terms of design, interior, performance, and overall driving experience.

History and Design

The Mazda CX-60 is a relatively new addition to Mazda’s lineup, designed to offer a more premium experience compared to its predecessors. The first thing I noticed was that it looked a little bigger than a CX-5, and indeed, it is larger than the CX-50. This size increase translates to more interior space and a more commanding road presence.

Locally, the vehicle is available in both petrol and hybrid variants, catering to a wide range of preferences and needs.

Interior

Mazda has always prided itself on interiors that are heavily influenced by German automakers, and the CX-60 is no exception. The cabin is adorned with soft-touch materials, giving it a luxurious feel. The leather sport seats are both comfortable and supportive, perfect for long drives.

The armrest compartment houses USB ports, ensuring that your devices are always charged. The dual control air-conditioner system and dual airbags with side curtains add to the comfort and safety of the vehicle. The Bose audio package is tuned to perfection, providing an immersive listening experience. Additionally, the wireless charging pad with a signal light is a convenient feature for modern drivers.

The spacious sunroof adds an airy feel to the cabin, while the 12.5-inch screen and seat memory functions enhance the overall driving experience.

Infotainment and Audio System

The infotainment system in the CX-60 is top-notch. The 12.5-inch screen is crisp and responsive, making it easy to navigate through various functions. The AM/FM radio, along with four USB ports, ensures that you have multiple options for entertainment. The Bose audio package, as mentioned earlier, delivers excellent sound quality, making every drive enjoyable.

Cargo Space

One of the standout features of the CX-60 is its cargo space. The larger dimensions of the vehicle translate to a more spacious boot, with 477 litres with the rear seats up, making it ideal for family trips or transporting large items. The rear seats can be folded down to further increase the cargo capacity, providing flexibility for various needs.

Driving Experience

Driving the 2.5-litre Mazda CX-60 AWD is a delight. The vehicle gradually accelerates as there is no turbo, but when it reaches top speed, it does so in a commanding way. The 8-speed SkyActiv Drive transmission is smooth and responsive, making gear changes almost imperceptible.

The CX-60 comes with multiple driving modes: normal, sport, and off-road, allowing you to tailor the driving experience to your preferences. The 20” rims and rain-sensing wipers add to the vehicle’s practicality and performance. Also, the 360 camera system and active driving display (heads-up) help keep your eyes on the road, enhancing safety.

A small thing that piqued my interest was the turning radius, which is impressive for a vehicle of this size, making it easy to manoeuvre in tight spaces.

The 2.5-litre Mazda CX-60 AWD is a well-rounded SUV that offers a blend of luxury, performance, and practicality. Whether you’re looking for a family vehicle or a daily driver, the CX-60 is worth considering. Its spacious interior, advanced features, and impressive driving dynamics make it a standout choice in its segment.
