Unwavering support for body cams

THE EDITOR, Madam:

In Thursday’s, November 14 letter of the day, former Deputy Commissioner of Police Mark Shields presented the case for body-worn cameras (BWCs) for the Jamaica Constabulary Force (JCF).

I believe the time has come for this idea to become a reality, thereby eliminating claims of any mistreatment by the JCF.

If these cameras have been successfully used in other parts of the world, then what is preventing Jamaica from following suit? One of the excuses being given is the matter of suitability.

Why not delegate a responsible person to embark on as fact-finding project to determine what is best for the JCF? Or are we saying the country cannot afford to fund BWCs?

Why are we rewarding politicians with taxpayers’ money, yet we cannot find the money needed to keep our policemen more honourable, fairer to the people they are supposed to serve and protect?

Whatever the reason for this reluctance, we ask those of integrity to stand up and be counted.

As I write this, my spirit also longs for politicians to be men and women of integrity who will think of deprived, needy Jamaicans who elected them to serve our country but are seeing avaricious beings only greedy for gain.

When will there be a change? Do we have to wait for the return of Jesus Christ?
