AFTER MISSING out on winning the FIA Karting European Championships for juniors by only two points, Alex Powell was disappointed but has now turned his focus on the World Championships later this year.

“I felt disappointment and frustration that I missed the championship by two points. I was still very proud of the job we did in the second half of the European Championship. We won two of the four events and got third in the other one,” he said.

The Jamaican sensation said although the championships did not go as he had hoped, there were many memorable moments for him.

“I would say the highlight of the season so far is when I won my first FIA event in Kristianstad, Sweden,” he said.

“That was not only a monumental and historic moment for myself, but also for the whole of the Caribbean.”

The 14-year-old said he is driven by these accomplishments to continue his journey to a possible championship title.

“I think that I am more than capable of being competitive in future championships. We have seen that this year I have been developing and usually fighting at the top,” he said.

“I know I have areas for improvement which hopefully will allow me to be even more competitive.”

EYES ON WORLD CHAMPS

With ever-improving performances, he has set his sights the World Championships, scheduled for Italy in September.

“So far this season I have definitely felt big improvements, especially in the last three months,” he said.

“I am happy with the steps that the team and I have made over the last few months and hopefully we can keep improving ahead of the World Championships.”

Still, Powell is acutely aware that his performances aren’t all his own.

“I would have to give credit to the people that surround me at the racetrack,” he said.

“All their experience and knowledge help me improve race by race to become a better driver in all areas.”
