My recent article, 'My vagina is not public property', published in The Sunday Gleaner of August 3, 2014, brought the issue of street and sexual harassment to the nation's consciousness in a way I could not have anticipated but for which I am grateful.

The framers of Jamaica's 2011 Charter of Fundamental Rights and Freedoms, despite a strong public lobby, stubbornly refused to include the phrase 'freedom of the press' as one of the fundamental freedoms to be enjoyed by Jamaicans, as is done elsewhere.

One hundred and eighty years today, two brothers, Jacob and Joshua deCordova, started a newspaper on Harbour Street. It was called The Gleaner and Weekly Compendium of News. It was published on Saturdays only. This was an uneasy time in the country.

The standard life cycle of most polarising women's issues is that they almost always germinate in Parliament and then are swiftly ushered into the media to die. Then again, that is pretty much the case with most topical issues; the fervour and interest in the conversations gradually dissipate.
We are grateful to Donovan Stanberry, the permanent secretary in the agriculture ministry, for his explanation of the meandering that has characterised the divestment of the Wallenford Coffee Company, which, apparently, is typical when selling government enterprises.
