Education Matters | Ministry of Education starts special CSEC exam preparations
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information has commenced a series of professional development sessions for teachers. This is to provide additional support to a select set of schools as they prepare their Grade 11 students to sit the 2017 Caribbean Examinations Council Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CXC/ CSEC) Examinations in mathematics, English language and the sciences. A series of camps and workshops has also commenced for students to better prepare them for the examinations
Day camps
The day camps are aimed at providing additional support to students registered to sit the respective CSEC examinations and who are at risk of attaining a Grade IV or V in the respective subject areas. These camps began in December 2016 and will continue till March and April of 2017.
The subjects include mathematics, english language, chemistry, physics, biology and integrated science. Students will sit mock examinations in some of the aforementioned subject areas.
They will also be engaged in exploring concepts that CXC/CSEC reports and the analysis of the mock examinations show as areas of weakness for the students. A cadre of facilitators has been identified, trained, and deployed to work with students in each school.
The camps, which are to be held in March and April, will specifically focus on examination preparation and include sessions that will concentrate on practice questions and examination techniques.
The Ministry of Education, Youth and Information is underwriting the costs of these curriculum-intervention activities.
Principals and teachers are being asked to mobilise their students to ensure their attendance at the planned camps, so that these students can maximise their ability to do their best in the 2017 sitting of these examinations.
