The year 2022 was quite a year for the cinema, and this year looks to be no different. Several films yet to be released have given a slight taste of what to expect, and as always we hope they can deliver. Here are the movies that seem most promising for 2023.

1. Oppenheimer

Christopher Nolan is well known for his mind-and-time bending fiction, but he’s also shown skill at historical film-making with Dunkirk. Oppenheimer takes a look at the man behind the atomic bomb, and viewers can expect a thrilling and tense spectacle.

2. Barbie

It’s the battle of 7/21 as the bright and colourful Barbie is to release on the same day as the dark and gloomy Oppenheimer. If the trailer is anything to go by, Barbie is set to be a star-studded extravaganza, with Margot Robbie bringing the titular doll to life.

3. Guardians of the Galaxy: Volume 3

Returning director James Gunn brings his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy to its final conclusion. Though the band of ne’er do well galactic heroes are sure to be seen again, this film promises to bring closure to their journey’s that started almost a decade ago.

4. Knock at the cabin

M. Night Shyamalan has had a few misses in his career, but his latest projects have thus far been heralded as a return to form. With yet another intriguing concept, Knock at the Cabin asks an impossible question. Here’s hoping the answer is one that satisfies.

5. Killers of the Flower Moon

Martin Scorcese may not love superhero cinema, but he certainly loves a good crime story. His latest film will tell the tale of a mysterious murder in the 1920s, and features the compelling cast of Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio, Brendan Fraser and Jesse Plemons.

6. Creed 3

Rocky is out, but Creed is back on the big screen. Michael B. Jordan returns to the titular role and this time flexes his film-making skills for his directorial debut. We can only hope he’ll be as talented behind the camera as he is in front of it.

7. Spider-Man: Across the spider-verse

At the beginning of 2022 I placed this film on my most-anticipated list. Unfortunately, the film was delayed, but I haven’t been dismayed. It still remains the follow-up to one of the best animated films of the last decade, so I’ll certainly be in line on opening night.

8. Mission Impossible Dead Reckoning

Finally, yet another film that was meant to come out last year, but didn’t. The trailer for this film shows much of what you expect, which is grounded action on a scale you won’t find anywhere else.
