When Sunshine Velvet received the news on Sunday, October 16, 2022, that her husband, Ralston ‘Sycure Gyani’ Richards, had died, her entire world was suddenly turned upside down.

“I’ve never experienced anything like this before. Sycure was everything to me ... he was my world. We shared a love that was so great. Every night since he died, I go to bed crying. I’ve been having suicidal thoughts and sometimes I cut myself. I guess I do it to numb the pain that I am feeling inside,” said Sunshine Velvet, whose real name is Shantell Anderson-Richards.

On-the-rise entertainer, Sycure Gyani, 32, lost his life in a tragic motorcycle accident while travelling along the Boscobel main road in St Mary. Every day since his passing has been a struggle for the young, grieving widow, who is also an artiste.

However, she is determined to go on with her music career because she knows that’s what he would have wanted.

She recalled that they met at a recording studio in Ocho Rios and quickly became fast friends, eventually falling in love and getting married.

“The first time I saw Sycure he was singing a love song. I was blown away by the tenderness of his voice. Another time I bumped into him on the street in Ocho Rios and we exchanged numbers. He saved my number under the name ‘My Wife’ and showed me. I asked him why he did that, and he said ‘because you’re going to be my wife’.”

Sunshine Velvet recently released single titled To Sycure, which is a tribute to her late husband.

“This is an expression of love. I recorded it for my husband, so it really means a lot to me. It is a symbol of our undying love,” she said.

The song, which was produced by Conroy Smith for Love Star Music was released on February 24.

Some of Sunshine Velvet’s other songs are Baby Oil, a collaboration with Sycure Gyani, My King, Memories and Paedophile.
