Kelly's World | 'Walking' away can be a good thing
If you've never heard of The Walking Dead (or its sister show Fear The Walking Dead), then spoiler alert, you're about to learn a few things.
Both shows follow the lives of various characters after zombies overrun the planet.
I mean, it's about zombies. Who wouldn't like a series about that? There have been movies on the same topic, so why wouldn't a series do well?
Fantasy worlds, wizards, and dragons do it for some people. For others, it's all about the dead walking the Earth, looking to satisfy the only urge they have left - to eat.
So many a villain and hero has been munched on in the show, and at times, it's actually funny.
But, of course, the real point of the show is to show the strength of the human character in the face of adversity, and to just remind us that none of us know when our time is up (a nuff fan favourite dead over the years).
TOO ATTACHED
And that's why, alas, I've stopped watching it now. I realise that I was getting a tad too attached to the show.
Like I've written before about how people get jazzed up over Game of Thrones, I realised that's how I was getting over The Walking Dead.
I realised how deep in I was recently, when a character - not a human, by the way - was killed off.
There was this tiger (how a tiger ends up in a movie about a zombie apocalypse is another matter all in itself), named Shiva.
And the striped feline was the pet and protector of a character named King Ezekiel (another spoiler alert, he ain't no real king. In his own words, he's just 'some guy').
In defending her master, Shiva bit the dust figuratively, by being bitten, literally, by about 30 zombies.
And, big and serious, me nearly cry! Yep, big old tough grey-back man like me was bummed that di writer dem kill off Shiva.
Now seeing it happen right then and there is one thing. To still be thinking about it the next morning? Well, that's where I drew the line.
It reminds me of a quote from Robert De Niro in the movie Heat, "Don't let yourself get attached to anything you are not willing to walk out on in 30 seconds flat if you feel the heat around the corner."
In this case, what I was feeling was sorrow and regret, not heat, and it wasn't around the corner, it was in my stomach.
So I'm done with the show. And now that I think of it, there are other things I might be getting too attached to. Hmm, dem might haffi get jettisoned as well.
Don't misunderstand, there are some things (and people) we should always hold dear.
But if we all did a little soul searching, I'm sure we could all find stuff that we thought was collectable, but was really just clutter.
So bye, zombies. Have fun. This Walking Dead fan has called it a day.
