Prime Time Action

Primer creates the ideal canvas that holds on to whatever comes after, like foundation and concealer. The beauty wonder has been around for what seems like forever. Still, a lot of us don’t know what it’s for. So, Flair journeyed to EC Makeup Bar for a beauty chat with makeup artist Shanique Frances. She spilled the beans about the puzzling base products.

“Primers create a barrier between your skin and makeup, so the products do not seep into your pores, open pores, age your skin or lead to breakouts,” she said.

The beauty expert was quick to point out the different types of primers: mattifying, blurring, hydrating, and the list goes on. Choosing a primer is easy. But don’t just walk into a store and pick up the first one that you see. That’s risky business! You don’t want to get a primer that’s for dry skin when you have oily skin. Instead, get help to choose one that complements your skin type.

If you’re hoping to correct redness or smooth out fine lines, there are primers designed just for that.

‘I don’t need a primer!’ I hope that’s not what you are mumbling underneath your breath, because you do. That’s if you want a sleek look for your makeup. Plus, if you apply makeup on dry skin without applying the base product, you’re compromising a gorgeous finish with an ashy face.

“They don’t only protect your skin. Primers help with hydration and adds a little moisture to skin so, you’ll be looking smoother and more flawless,” Frances told Flair.

WHEN TO USE A PRIMER

Applying a primer is the first step in your beauty session and after the last phase of your skincare regime. You don’t need a lot; just a dime size on your cheeks and forehead. You’ll only need to gently massage the cream across the face: remember to cover any frown lines and wrinkles and under the eyes. With primers, a little goes a long way. In fact, using too much can ruin your makeup before you’re even finished with creating your desired look.

And no, you don’t need a brush for this stage of your beauty session.

There are a number of beauty brands that you can choose from. Frances’ favourite is the long-wearing L’Oreal Paris Infallible Matte-Lock and one you could invest in as well. But if you want to learn more about which primer is best for you, all you have to do is head down to the EC Makeup Bar and let the expert do her job.
