Jamaicans do love their dumplings (boiled or fried), fritters and not to mention pastry. But we do not always like the main ingredient - flour - but Jamaica Harvest is working to change that.

Jamaica Harvest is offering an alternative to the white flour that we use to create our home-made tarts and other baked products, and I am not talking about wholewheat. They now offer cassava, breadfruit and sweet potato flours.

These alternatives were created not only because the market could really do with some diversity, but also because these are foods that Jamaica Harvest can get in abundance at home. They are healthy starches packed with vitamins and rich in fibres, according to Jamaica Harvest's Natricia Brown.

They took the initiative to create a product that will help to alleviate illnesses such as celiac disease and other gluten-related conditions. Also, persons who are diabetic and have high cholesterol will benefit from Jamaica Harvest products.

The flour is said to have the right consistency to make all the Jamaican favourites.

"They are dehydrated and milled to be flours. Depending on the individual's preference, they can add regular flour if they want a more gummy texture. These flours can also be used as thickening agents, such as making a roux, cheese sauces, or baked products," Brown tells Food.

HEALTH-CONSCIOUS

They pride themselves that their Jamaica Harvest flours are rich in fibres, healthy proteins, B-complex vitamins, magnesium and potassium.

Jamaica Harvest has also produced a granola cereal mix (pumpkin seeds, flax seeds, sunflower seed, oats, and honey) and chocolate tea. They admit that the health-conscious and fitness enthusiasts have received the cereal with open arms and welcome the idea of a well-compact cereal mix with the right nutritional benefits. The flavour is also pleasant.

The chocolate tea gives a feeling of nostalgia, taking you back to childhood days when your mother made that cup of hot chocolate. Just the aroma will appeal to your senses. It's a perfect beverage complement.

Jamaica Harvest offers you authentic Jamaican flavour.
