Prime Minister Andrew Holness has saluted healthcare workers and other Jamaicans dedicated to the fight against COVID-19 as the island celebrates its 58th anniversary of Independence amid a global pandemic.

However, in spite of that, he said that the Government was committed to “making this the decade of growth for Jamaica to anchor our peace, prosperity, and resilience”.

“A new Jamaica is emerging, filled with hope and optimism,” Holness added in his Independence message.

The prime minister asked fellow countrymen to ponder how their freedom and independence could be used to improve the lives of all Jamaicans.

“We must acknowledge that even though we are free and independent, this comes with responsibility and accountability,” he added. “There is no reward without work, and there is no success without sacrifice. Like the laws of nature, these are the immutable laws of progress.”

Added Holness: “The challenge before us is to give true meaning to our political independence by achieving economic independence and prosperity. This prosperity must be shared so that every Jamaican who is willing to work is justly rewarded. The true realisation of a prosperous society is the realisation of a socially just society that is a fair, orderly, and equitable society.”
